Tom . Powell
PRODUCER
ABOUT
I am a Creative Producer specialising in dynamic, interdisciplinary projects which combine theatre and live music.
I also work freelance as an Events Manager for conferences, launch events, and corporate functions, perform regularly as a professional musician across the UK and abroad, and programme Live Music for venues across London and the South East.
I hold an MA with distinction in Creative Producing from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and a BA(Hons) in Drama and Theatre Arts from Goldsmiths University. I am a member of the Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship and have a background in making interdisciplinary work across various sectors.
MY PRACTICE
My practice as a director and producer began professionally as the Artistic Director of Creative Vortex Productions - a diverse production company specifically aimed at making academic research accessible and engaging, through Theatre and Film as Public Engagement Events.
Between 2016 and 2019 I created mid-scale public engagement events involving elements of theatre, participation, food, drink, live music, and original film - all within a single narrative framework, underpinned by genuine academic research; creating an accessible gateway into research for the general public.
With Creative Vortex, I also produced the national tour of, Devils on Horseback: Secret Trials of WWI Conscientious Objectors (2018) to 8 different venues of the UK.

Now working as an independent producer, I also provide workshops and business development support for students, graduates and artists to explore entrepreneurial tools, think about their wider future, and consider the impact they would like to make in the world.
Approaching the role of a Creative Producer from a Live Music and Theatre background allows me to push the boundaries of each specialism, combine the two networks effectively, and employ innovative producing techniques that are a product of both disciplines.

TRAINING
Theatrical producers are creative decision-makers who manage all aspects of putting on a production.
What does a Creative Producer do?
Producers raise finances, book spaces, negotiate and issue contracts, and manage how the budget is spent. They organise and manage technical, stage management, and workshop functions, and are responsible for ensuring a successful project all the way through to the first live performance.
